In Brené Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection, she says, "How much we know and understand ourselves is critically important, but there is something that is even more essential to living a wholehearted life: loving ourselves." She goes onto say, "We cannot give our children what we don't have".
I would take this statement even further to say, We cannot give OTHERS what we don't have! Doesn't that thought knock your socks off!
To exist in photographs is an exercise in learning to love and accept yourself. It also increases your capacity to love and accept others, all others, especially those most precious to you.
It is the reason I have my portrait taken by other photographers. It is the reason I have a self portraiture practice. I want to live more and more whole-hearted and that means loving ME!
It is also a huge reason I take portraits of others. It is like holding up a mirror to you to show you just how beautiful and worthy you are.....YES, YOU throughout your whole life journey!
I encourage you to get in front of the camera. Send the message to your children, your grandchildren, your beloveds, to all those who come after us, that loving and accepting yourself is a beautiful foundation to build upon and priceless gift to give. Love yourself more......then pass it on!
